Although Hán, a senior in high school, had been studying harder than others, the results were not as expected, which left her wondering whether she was incapable and feeling uncertain about what was next for her.

Hán’s parents divorced when she was in elementary school, and since then her grandmother had been her primary caregiver. Hán accompanied her grandmother with limited mobility to the medical appointment and helped with household chores from a very young age. They lived off government grants. Although life was hard, they were content. After a referral, Hán applied to the children sponsorship program by The Mustard Seed Mission (MSM), which helped ease their financial burdens.

As Hán got older, her education spending increased. She recalled that when she received her first high school tuition invoice, she hesitated to tell her grandmother for fear of creating an additional financial burden on her family. Thankfully, when Hán was plagued by worries, the social worker made a home visit and informed Hán that her student grant application had been submitted. Hán was quite happy and felt relieved to get the aid just in time.

Considering global languages might provide a wide range of opportunities for her to improve her family’s finances, Hán enrolled in high school as an English major. Gradually, she found herself falling behind academically, which blunted her eagerness to study and left her feeling utterly helpless. The social worker encouraged Hán to participate in the Empower Taiwan Youth for Social Impact Project by the MSM. The course from the project helped Hán discover her personality traits and personal values, as well as her aspiration to become a nurse. Hán decided to go on to college as a nursing student, and the skills she gained as an English major afforded her the leverage to study nursing.

In retrospect, Hán didn’t lack ability but rather an affluent background, so she had no time to look at herself in a deeper manner and find the right learning path.
