Learning from Disasters

Because of climate change, disasters have become more and more difficult to predict. Disaster prevention and response can no longer rely solely on the government. From the experience of past disasters, we find that “community” always plays a key role in the response to disasters. If people in the community could make preparations in advance and were able to restore and recover as soon as possible after disasters, it is the so-called “resilience of the community”.

MSM Disaster Prevention and Relief Service Center has known that building community resilience is an urgent issue. In 2019, the Center has been promoting disaster prevention community training courses throughout Taiwan. Among the targets, the Hunei District of Kaohsiung City is the one that the Center has been with and cooperated with for a long time.

Since 2019, the Center has been working hand in hand with the Hunei District Office and various community associations on topics from “disaster self-protection”, “community resources and disaster evacuation routes”, “Map” and “Community Disaster Response Strategies Discussion”, all the way to advanced courses such as “Application of Technology to Disaster Prevention and Relief “ and “Disaster Resettlement and Reception Drill”. These enhance community perceptions of self-protection and self-help and mutual assistance. This year, the Center also assisted the Hunei community to set up the nation’s first “disaster cooperation volunteer center”, hoping the local community disaster prevention and relief team caN operate sustainably through dialogue, thinking, and sharing.

In the future, MSM will not only continue to build up the “resilience” in Hunei of Kaohsiung City but also sustain the spirit and belief of the founder, Mrs. Lillian R. Dickson, “Go wherever there is a need.” to continue to move to places in more needs.
