The daily life of a children’s home counselor

“Hi~ Teacher!” exclaims Linda, who had left Agape Children’s Home, and gave me a big hug when we met.

Old memories came flooding back one after another. I recalled how she had a febrile seizures soon after arriving at the children’s home and was being rushed to the hospital emergency room in a taxi in the middle of the night… I was scared out of my wits at the time!

How time flies. Linda, like many others from Agape Children’s Home, has grown up and left but stayed in touch. Once in a while, she would come back to visit her fellow younger friends and us. We are very pleased to see them live a stable life after leaving the children’s home.

Before I was personally engaged with the children in Agape Children’s Home, I thought being a “caregiver in a children’s home” was to help the children with their three meals a day and to look after them while growing up. It was not until I started working in the children’s home and spent time with these children that I realized that the scope of work of such a caregiver is far beyond my imagination. Even for ordinary families, it is not easy to dedicate such level of care towards their children!

What does a children’s home counselor do?

Education-wise, a counselor assists children with their schoolwork; Health-wise, in addition to annual health checkup and a cooperated medical team, there is also a mental health counseling service available to take care of children’s physical and mental health needs; When it comes to character-building, children are taught with the basic rules of ordinary dos and don’ts and learn to develop their ability of self-reliance. “Self-reliance” is indeed the most desired ability for children from Agape Children’s Home, because one day they will leave and enter the society on their own, without a strong support to fall back on. From tidying up their living environment, cooking food, and repairing items, they have no one but themselves to rely on. At the same time, it’s also a test of a child’s ability of judgment and decision-making. Therefore, almost everything imaginable that may be encountered in life, our team of dedicated counselors will do as best as we can to provide opportunities to our children so that they are well prepared before they leave us.

Add a touch of color to an ordinary daily life

In addition to the practicalities of daily life, we also provide opportunities for cultivating hobbies, such as playing piano, jazz drums, singing, guitar and other musical instruments which enable children to express their feelings. There is also a library in the children’s home which helps to develop their reading habits and enhance their knowledge of vocabulary and their ability to organize words. These rich and diverse activities help to prevent these children from becoming addicted to mobile phones or sucked into the virtual world, they also help to heal their inner traumas, to let them know that they are unique and worthy of love, so that they can grow up with wholesome characters. Although we cannot replace their parents and fulfill their craving for family affections, at Agape Children’s Home, we are willing to provide as much resources as we can material wise; we are also committed to give our upmost support and encouragement for any opportunity and training from which these children will benefit when growing up.

This is a brief introduction to the services provided in Agape Children’s Home.

Hopefully it helps you to learn more about Agape Children’s Home. We invite you to join us and become a sponsor to one of these children.

Together we can take care of these children in needs.
