On the night before Xiáng left care, members of Xiáng’s residential unit organized a farewell party for him and invited the staff who had been looking after him (director, social workers, and teachers) to the party. Everyone ate spicy hot pot prepared by kids and reminisced about Xiáng’s 11 years in a children’s home. The atmosphere was deeply moving.

When Xiáng first came into care, he frequently presented himself in a silly way and always made funny expressions and hilarious poses when the camera was pointing at him. His mischievous acts were still vividly remembered by the social workers. As time went on, Xiáng, now 180cm tall, became talented in multiple areas, such as doing sports and making easy meals. He shared teachers’ loads in both school and the children’s home. In the school choir, he was the teacher’s assistant. In the children’s home, he helped the younger brothers establish routines and rules as well as took photos at household events.

Learning How to Spread Kindness and Warmth

Xiáng seemed rather aloof when in fact he was warm-hearted. At the farewell party, Xiáng gave every teacher and friend a handwritten thank-you card that was prepared during his final months before leaving care, and he gave everyone a farewell hug as well. The director of Agape Children’s Home encouraged Xiáng to apply the virtues and skills he had acquired here to start a new life in the near future and emphasized that the adults who had accompanied him from childhood remained available whenever he needed help.
